The ROC Corporation has designed and built robots called Automata Pilgrim 7000 to help to rebuild the world. These robots have two security protocols; they can neither harm humans nor alter themselves or other robots. When police officer Sean Wallace shoots a robot and claims that it was altering itself, ROC insurance agent Jacq Vaucan is placed in charge of the investigation. Soon he believes that there is a &quot;clocksmith&quot; illegally modifying the robots. Jacq wants to live in the coast and asks his boss and friend Robert Bold to transfer him with his pregnant wife Rachel Vaucan to the coast. Robert offers the possibility if Jacq resolves the case. Jacq and Wallace go to a brothel where the modified robot Cleo attends and Wallace shoots its leg, expecting that the owner will lead them to the clocksmith. They meet Duprè but she is not the clocksmith that is modifying the robots. Soon Jacq discovers who is the responsible for modifying the robots but the Powers that Be in ROC believe that Jacq is the one to be blamed. Jacq Vaucan is an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation who investigates cases of robots violating their primary protocols against altering themselves. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity. It is I, ROBOT (2004), but slower. Starts out very nice with cool city locations, nice detective story, a bit noir-ish sci-fi. Then makes some bad choices and becomes a European drama - in a stupid way. Danish Sörensen is worst - but she doesn&#39;t have anything to work with either. Terrible dialog and a boring (almost mean) character, does make it difficult for her. Griffith doesn&#39;t understand her own dialogDr Dupre - she does a better jobCleo. Though her movie CHERRY 2000 (1987), with a similar story, is better.<br/><br/>Overall it&#39;s an interesting film with some really cool locations and neat robots. Dialogue is awful at places and the action moments are completely off. Suspense is not there at all, and the slow movements of the robots doesn&#39;t make them interesting - mainly, they&#39;re furniture.<br/><br/>Antonio Banderas does a great job though. He seems to enjoy himself, and that&#39;s the only reason why you&#39;re going to be able to watch the whole thing. If you&#39;re not used to watch European films, this will be difficult for you.<br/><br/>It surprises me a bit that it isn&#39;t better. Someone made a bad decision on making this too much drama, and that&#39;s what kills it. Had it stayed a detective story, without a shot fired, no wife and robots that actually does something, it had been a better film.<br/><br/>Maybe a fan edit will save this one someday… I watched this movie without any preconceived notions. In fact, I didn&#39;t even know what it was about. I was VERY surprised. Rarely does quality come out anymore. Most movies are all flash and no substance. This however was vastly different.<br/><br/>The movie has a lot of depth that makes you think. I wasn&#39;t so sure about casting Antonio Banderas in it however. He did fine, but I think it could had easily donewell or better with another actor. The end result is, however very well made. If you&#39;re looking for a Michael Bay film you will be disappointed however. I sincerely wish more movies like this were made. I know it&#39;s not going to be everyone&#39;s cup of tea, but it is different from the rest. You will be pleasantly surprised. The overwrought, uncontrolled sci-fi thriller Automata is a disappointing example of a film which lacks the imagination to follow persuasively through on its engaging initial premise.
